‘Get him in the first-team’ – Many Rangers fans wowed by ‘Special’ young talent in Colts win

Rangers fans were thrilled by Glenn Middleton’s performance on Tuesday night as the Colts won 2-0 against Clyde to set up a meeting with Celtic in the City of Glasgow Cup next month.

Middleton, 20, has found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season with the young winger appearing just once for Steven Gerrard.

The former Norwich attacker was used regularly by Gerrard in his debut season at Ibrox but unsuccessful loan spells at Hibernian and Bradford have seen him plummet down the pecking order.

However, Middleton is making quite the impression in Rangers’ youth sides and in his last performance, he managed to score twice to set up a cup final with Celtic.

Middleton bagged his first goal after a quick counter-attack before doubling his, and the Rangers Colts’ tally with an exquisite free-kick.

One fan claimed the winger’s free-kick was a “beauty“, while another said it was similar to something James Tavernier could pull off.

We’re surprised Middleton doesn’t get more game-time in the first-team than he does.

Every time he plays for the youth sides he seems to get himself on the scoresheet or be involved in goals but even though Jordan Jones is banned and Gerrard has a shortage of wingers, the 20-year-old hasn’t done enough to get into his squad.

Middleton did get a run out against Falkirk in the Betfred Cup last month.

He came off the bench for 35 minutes and according to stats by Wyscout, he managed to complete one out of two crosses, one out of 10 dribbles and nine out of 12 passes.

It wasn’t a display that mad us think he has to be in the side more regularly but it’s not as though he did anything wrong.

More chances should be on the horizon for Middleton. If not, a January loan could be on the cards.
