‘Very difficult’ – Exclusive: Alex McLeish worried by ominous Rangers transfer update
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has admitted that Rangers may find it impossible to keep hold of their players should “astronomical” bids be received in the next year.
In the recent Ibrox AGM, Stewart Robertson admitted that the Bears will need to start offloading “one or two” players each year to balance the books.
McLeish believes that the likes of Glen Kamara and Ryan Kent could attract serious interest from Premier League clubs and others across Europe.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “I believe it will be very difficult to lose them because there would be a fury, but at the same time, if it’s an offer you can’t refuse, that’s going to happen.
“If they put in massive bids, then it will be hard for them to turn it down, certainly, I’m sure they will do everything, especially Stevie will want to cement this league title and he won’t want to lose any of his best players.
“Then again, if an astronomical bid comes in for a certain player then business is business.”
Business is business, McLeish is spot on.
Having said that, Steven Gerrard will be demanding that he is able to keep the core of his side together should they start lifting silverware this season.
During Celtic’s run of dominance, the only players they lost in the past two years were Moussa Dembele and Kieran Tierney.
Selling the likes of Kent and Kamara would be huge losses.
Many Premier League clubs such as Leeds and Brighton have all been linked with those two recently, with both demanding huge fees – something those sides could match.
Kent reportedly told Rangers he wants to stay amid interest from the likes of Leeds, so hopefully, these big names will remain at Ibrox for many years to come.
