Manager hails ‘phenomenal’ Rangers star – claims he is ‘up there’ with best in Premier League
St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson has likened Rangers James Tavernier to Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.
Speaking to Herald and Times Sport, Davidson could not speak highly enough of the Gers captain following his incredible first half of the campaign.
Discussing the threat that he poses, the St Johnstone boss made comparisons to the Liverpool duo: “With Tavernier, you just need to look at his record. It’s been phenomenal – assists and goals. His numbers are great. When I was playing full-back I had to defend!
“I think it’s brilliant that you see full-backs contribute in attack like we see in the game today.
“Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool are two of the best and Tavernier’s delivery into the box is up there. It’s phenomenal.”
Tavernier’s numbers this season speak for themselves, in all competitions this season he has an incredible 17 goals and 14 assists from right-back.
Of those 17, 11 have come in the Premiership – making him the league’s top goalscorer ahead of Kevin Nisbet.
Tavernier producing at both ends
Tavernier cannot really put a foot wrong this season and his form from right-back has been a huge part of Rangers’ success under Steven Gerrard this season.
His threat is so unique and he has become crucial to how the Gers line up tactically, giving Gerrard an extra threat from the back.
While it is his attacking form that grabs the headlines, it is worth highlighting how well Rangers and Tavernier have done defensively as well this season.
The club have only conceded five goals in the league and Tavernier is certainly playing his part in that.
As per Wyscout, the right-back did not give the ball away inside his own half once against Motherwell.
Per 90 minutes in the Scottish Premiership, he is also averaging just 0.5 fouls and three interceptions, according to Wyscout.
Add to that an impressive disciplinary record, which has seen him pick up just one yellow card all season and you get an all-action defender helping Rangers thrive at both ends of the pitch.
