'Rangers are following me' - In-demand defender confirms transfer approach from Gers

Rangers have made contact over a potential deal to sign Marijan Cabraja from HNK Gorica, according to the player himself.

Cabraja told Croatian sports paper Sportske that the Gers have been keeping a close eye on his performances: “It is true that Rangers are following me. Contact has been established but it all depends on how the situation with Borna Barisic develops.

“I don’t believe that the Scots will pay as much as Gorica are asking for but let’s leave that aside now.”

It is claimed that Cabraja is viewed as a potential replacement for Borna Barisic, should his fellow countryman leave Ibrox in the near future.

Cabraja’s agent, Miroslav Bicanic, has also been discussing his client’s future, revealing: “I can’t talk about specific clubs, but I can confirm that there are a lot of enquiries for Cabraja.

“For example, we have already rejected offers from Italy and Poland, and we have indications that offers from Russia and MLS could arrive soon. Right now it’s difficult to say what will happen but there is interest in Cabraja every day.”

A good Barisic alternative

A Croatian youth international, Cabraja certainly appears to be a man in demand and the Gers will not be short of competition if they do push to sign him in the near future.

He is only valued at £585,000 by Transfermarkt, so it remains to be how much a potential deal could cost.

If he is being signed as an alternative or potential long-term replacement to Barisic, Cabraja needs to be able to match the attacking output that has made the former such a success this season.

He only has seven assists for Gorica since joining the club in 2018, however, per 90 minutes this season, Cabraja is averaging more forward passes (16 to 12) and passes into the final third (7 to 4) than the Rangers defender, according to Wyscout.
