‘Gamble’ – Exclusive: McLeish claims Rangers ‘Speed merchant’ could leave Ibrox

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has claimed that Rangers winger Jordan Jones has become a gamble that hasn’t worked out during his time at Ibrox.

The Northern Ireland international has endured a rollercoaster year in Glasgow and is currently serving his long-term ban for breaching COVID regulations.

McLeish admitted he thought Jones had turned a corner after his goal against Motherwell this season but is now a contender to leave in order for the Bears to balance the books.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Every player you bring is a gamble unless it’s a proven household name.

“I thought Jordan would step up, he’s had some brilliant performances with Kilmarnock in the past, and he’s come through a speed merchant. He scored a really good goal for Rangers [v Motherwell] and I thought wow, this kid has made a comeback.

“At the moment it doesn’t seem to have worked, and he might be another that Stevie is considering to balance the books with, but more importantly let a guy go.”

Jones always appears to fight his way back into Rangers’ squad, and throw it all away only a matter of weeks after.

The 26-year-old has only completed 214 minutes this season in all competitions, and that goal against Motherwell was the only positive he has left behind.

Steven Gerrard hasn’t used Jones since the Livingston game back in October, and there wouldn’t be many who would miss the winger should he be moved on next month.

In the recent AGM at Ibrox, it was shared that Rangers may need to start selling one or two players each year, and Jones is an obvious candidate to leave – time will tell.
