‘No equal’ – Exclusive: Alex McLeish blown away by ‘Amazing’ Rangers ace, makes POTY claim

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has been blown away by Rangers captain James Tavernier this season, claiming he is playing like a “man possessed.”

The Bears defender is topping every chart in the Scottish Premiership, scoring an incredible 11 goals and adding eight assists in his 18 games.

McLeish has claimed that Tavernier is definitely the player of 2020, with the skipper the name everyone is talking about this season.

Speaking to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “I keep saying that, confidence in a footballer is an amazing thing.

“If you’ve got the athleticism, the skills and he’s now got the concentration defensively then you think you can beat the world – Tavernier is playing like a man possessed.

“He’s certainly the player of this year. Certainly, since the action begun again there’s been no equal in terms of Tavernier. Tavernier is the guy on everybody’s lips.”

There is no arguing with McLeish on this one.

Tavernier is the clear candidate for Player of the Year this season, and there is a strong possibility of him taking home numerous awards at the end of this campaign.

Looking at Tavernier’s season, he is producing extraordinary numbers.

The 29-year-old is producing stats that have never been seen before from a right-back, and that counts for any league or any player.

Tavernier doesn’t only get his name on the scoresheet, but he plays nearly as a winger from defence – making 57 progressive runs and having 54 touches in the opposing box according to WyScout.

There is no arguing that Tavernier is the leading candidate for the Player of the Year award, and anyone else picking up that accolade would simply be laughable.

McLeish is spot on. Tavernier is playing with the utmost confidence, and just looking at his highlight reel from this season proves he is the best around.
