Rangers suffered a shock defeat in the Scottish League Cup on Wednesday night, losing 3-2 against St Mirren.
The Gers went in front early through Connor Goldson and it looked like it would be a routine performance from Steven Gerrard’s side.
However, the game was turned on its head after two goals from Jamie McGrath gave the hosts the lead.
Steven Davis looked like he rescued a draw late on, equalising in the 88th minute, only for Conor McCarthy to grab a winner in the dying seconds.
Jim Goodwin’s side move into the last four as Rangers miss out on a potential golden opportunity to win their first trophy under Gerrard.
The former England international named a competitive starting XI, with Cedric Itten and Bongani Zungu coming into the side on Wednesday night.
It was a painful end to Rangers’ incredible unbeaten run this season and a defeat that sent shockwaves through the Gers’ fanbase.
Speaking after the game, as reported by The Herald, Gerrard issued a rallying cry to his players to ensure that the defeat does not linger ahead of the meeting with Motherwell on Saturday – where the Gers can move 16 points clear at the top.
On the defeat, Gerrard claimed the reactions from the players will be crucial: “I know what I’ll be doing. I’ll be trying to react in a positive way. Of course, it will sting. It will hurt. But it’s my job to pick them up and make use they go again.”
These fans on social media had a lot to say about the performance and the approach from Gerrard and here are some of the best reactions.
We didn't deserve to win that in the second half st mirren wanted it more and got it..
Horrendous defending after we looked to bail ourselves out

The slack pass to give them the corner is shambolic. Totally needless.

You’re right CJ Gerrard put out a second string team ignoring what he’s been installing in the team next game next game he’s the one that needs to step up and take responsibility I still believe in Gerrard but he needs to understand there’s no easy game in Scotland

SG out coached himself again. Who does'nt put their best side out in a game so important…..that's the difference between being a great player and a great coach. Can history repeat itself……for sure 😡

First time this season we have looked like the players thought all they had to do was turn up and we would win. Reality check hit us hard, big chance to get some silverware gone. Important that we make sure this is only a blip and doesn’t turn into something worse

Definitely not at the races today 3 mistakes for there goals. You can blame the ref for loads of things in that game but we are the cause of our own problems. This will either give them a kick up the arse or a bad way

Took the game for granted! Too much chopping and changing of the team. Poor game management. Hopefully this is a huge wake up call! Can’t take teams for granted! Gotta play our strongest team. Big players on the bench tonight.

We bottled it. Played poor. No movement. Got what we deserved in the end.
