‘MOTM’, ‘Unreal’, ‘Excellent’ – Many Rangers fans blown away by player despite loss v St Mirren

Rangers fans were raving about Bongani Zungu on Twitter on Wednesday night even though they saw their team suffer their first defeat of the season against St Mirren.

Steven Gerrard’s men were dumped out of the Betfred Cup courtesy of a 3-2 defeat away at the Buddies, who clinched victory in stoppage time through Conor McCarthy.

It means that the long wait for silverware will hopefully go on for a little longer with the Light Blues still in pole position to win the Scottish Premiership.

Zungu, 28, has had a stuttering start to life at Ibrox after joining the Gers from Amiens on loan in October.

The South Africa international had to have a period in self-isolation and the form of Gerrard’s other midfielders has meant the new arrival has found game-time hard to come by.

He was handed his second start for Rangers at St Mirren on Wednesday and managed to impress a large section of supporters on social media, with one claiming that he was the Gers’ “MOTM“.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Was Zungu that great against St Mirren?

Let’s face it, no one was amazing. It was a dire performance all around from a side that should have really won that game.

Zungu is still a new player at Ibrox so people are going to cut him more slack than others and that might explain why he had fans raving about him on Wednesday night.

But we do hope that’s not as good as it gets from Gerrard’s latest signing. We need to see a lot more from him to suggest he can be a top player for Rangers going forward.
