Athletic journalist clears up confusion over Alfredo Morelos’ Rangers ban

Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell has explained how Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is able to be retrospectively banned by the SFA following his actions against Dundee United.

Morelos was booked during Sunday’s match against Dundee United after challenging Mark Connolly with his elbow.

The charge was upgraded to violent conduct by the Scottish FA and the Columbian will now serve a two-game ban.

Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell is reporting that the SFA judged Morelos’ action to be a ‘red card offence’ which is why he has been handed the ban.

Campbell tweeted, “Under rule 13.2.2 of the SFA’s Judicial Panel Protocol it was judged that this part of the act which constituted a red card was “not seen” by the officials.”

This ban comes as a blow to the Gers after Steven Gerrard backed his man following the incident and the striker will miss tomorrow’s Scottish League Cup game against St Mirren.

Some fans were left confused as to how Morelos could be banned after the game, as he was booked for his challenge during the match.

The SFA claim that the act that was worthy of a red card wasn’t seen by the match officials which is why the striker can be banned.

This means that during the game, Morelos was booked for the lateness of his challenge as none of the officials spotted his ‘violent’ act towards Connolly.

The ‘violent conduct’ is what has been punished after the game and it is only fair that the Colombian picks up a ban after making such a rash error. This showed shades of the old Morelos and it was perhaps was a product of his frustrations in front of goal.

Maybe the best thing for the Colombian is a spell on the sidelines after his poor recent performances and ill-judged actions.
