Spanish side plot January swoop for £3m Rangers star – report
A number of sides around the world – including Spanish club Sevilla – are reportedly interested in signing Rangers midfielder Ianis Hagi during the January transfer window.
According to Turkish outlet Hurriyet, Istanbul Basaksehir, Cagliari, Sampdoria, Sevilla, New York City FC and Toronto FC all hold an interest in the Romanian international.
Hagi has scored two goals and provided six assists in all competitions (via WhoScored), but has found himself out of favour in recent weeks.
The 22-year-old has started eight of the Gers’ 17 Scottish Premiership matches so far this season while making three starts in the Europa League (via WhoScored).
The attacking midfielder was on target during his last appearance against Lech Poznan in the Europa League and Steven Gerrard hinted that he would get more opportunities in the future.
When asked whether Hagi could be in line for more minutes after last Thursday’s Europa League match in Poland, Gerrard said: “The good thing for me is that everyone is performing ever so well, everyone is training well, everyone is giving me something to think about.
“There is a lot of football coming up, the games are coming thick and fast and everyone needs to be ready to come in and contribute at the right time.”
Price is key
Rangers would likely prefer to keep Hagi around but there is certainly a price where they would entertain the possibility.
Rangers paid £3.15m for Hagi this summer and should a bid much north of that number come in from one of the teams said to be interested, the club would have to think about it.
Given Hagi’s age, he could still improve a lot and with Steven Davis and Scott Arfield in their 30s, he could represent the future of the Rangers midfield alongside Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo. Despite being in and out of the side, a tally of two goals and six assists is impressive while he averages 1.5 key passes per game in the league (via WhoScored).
Overall, the club should look to keep hold of him, barring an offer that they cannot refuse.
