Steven Gerrard confirms rare start for Rangers ace v Lech Poznan
Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Rangers midfielder Bongani Zungu will start against Lech Poznan on Thursday evening.
Rangers have already qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League, but know that a win will see them finish top ahead of Benfica.
The Bears will be without Filip Helander and Ryan Jack, with Zungu one of limited changes set to take place from the 4-0 win over Ross County.
Gerrard described this chance for Zungu as a “fantastic opportunity” – especially with Jack still missing out until this weekend.
“Bongani (Zungu) will be playing tomorrow and it is a fantastic opportunity for him to perform,” he said.
Rangers fans were left buzzing with the news, and couldn’t hide their delight in the reactions to watching Zungu.
The South African international has featured four times since arriving from Amiens, completing 147 minutes of action.
His longest piece of action came in the League Cup win over Falkirk last week, where he started and completed 72 minutes.
The 28-year-old made six interceptions and completed 12 recoveries for the Bears according to WyScout, and finished with an 87% pass success rate.
With top spot on the line tomorrow, this is Zungu’s biggest test yet since arriving in Glasgow, and Gerrard will be intrigued to see how he performs under pressure.
A solid performance could leave the Bears boss with no choice but to keep him in the side for the league clash with Dundee United on Sunday.
