Former Dundee midfielder Tom Hateley revealed that he gave Glen Kamara a “glowing recommendation” when Rangers asked him about the Finland international.
Hateley and Kamara played together for a season at Dundee prior to the Finn’s move to Ibrox in 2019.
The 25-year-old has been outstanding for the Gers so far this season, averaging 69.5 passes per game in the league, with 91% accuracy (via WhoScored).
Hateley, who now plays for Cypriot side AEK Larnaca, explained that he spoke with the Rangers recruitment team before Kamara made the move.
He said (via Daily Record): “I remember talking to somebody about Glen. It was someone within the recruitment side of things at Rangers when I was in training there, to keep myself fit.
“I was asked my opinion and only said good things about Glen. I didn’t hesitate to give him a glowing recommendation because I knew Glen was good enough to go to Rangers and back it up and that is exactly what he has done.”
The former Arsenal man has been a crucial part of Steven Gerrard’s midfield this season, starting all five Europa League group stages matches and making 12 Scottish Premiership appearances (via WhoScored).
While Gerrard has regularly rotated his midfield, Kamara has always been present in the big games, where his engine, passing and creativity has shone through. His defensive play has been exceptional in the Europa League in particular, where he averages 2 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per match (via WhoScored).
Against Standard Liege last Thursday, he played a key part in winning the penalty just before half-time that allowed James Tavernier to make it 2-2, while his clever reverse pass allowed Ryan Kent to square for Scott Arfield’s winner.
He averages 1.1 key passes per 90 minutes in both the Scottish Premiership and the Europa League so far this season (via WhoScored) and this is an area that Gerrard would perhaps like to see him improve. He has so much quality on the ball and proved that with some of his play against Standard Liege, it is now about doing that more often.
