‘Absolutely ridiculous’ – Ally McCoist stunned by one Rangers player after 4-0 v Ross County
talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist has been left stunned by the form of Rangers right-back James Tavernier who he said is “absolutely ridiculous at the moment”.
Tavernier was on the scoresheet again on Sunday and that was his 16th goal of the season – from right-back.
He’s also chipped in with 11 assists and McCoist heaped praise on him on the Breakfast show (talkSPORT, Monday, 9am)
“The Rangers captain James Tavernier is absolutely ridiculous at the moment,” McCoist said. “He’s on fire. On fire.”
“He’s got 16 goals, 10 or 11 assists. Clearly, he does take penalties but he’s been bending them into the corner from free kicks. He’s scored some from the six-yard box. He headed one off the bar against Benfica. He’s just on fire. Brilliant to watch.
“The brand of football they’re playing, they’re all confident. Everyone knows their jobs, there’s nothing clearer than that in the Rangers side at the moment.
“That was the Ross County side that beat Celtic. On paper, it was a tough fixture. Rangers are on this road and I think everyone’s talking about Celtic but it’s important to note the job Steven Gerrard is doing.
“Nothing’s been won yet but it’s been a fantastic start to the season.”
Tav the man
Tavernier came in for criticism from Rangers fans last season but we knew he had it in him to come back and prove what he can do.
He only scored three goals in the Premiership in the whole of last season and has already got 10 before Christmas this campaign.
It’s hard to put your finger on what exactly has changed but McCoist is right when he says the whole Rangers side is clicking at the moment.
Confidence is sky-high and that seems to be the case for Tavernier more than any other Rangers player.
Putting his numbers into context, Morelos has only scored eight all season. To score double what your main striker has got from right-back is plainly ridiculous.
With the January window coming up, some fans might be worried that his numbers will see interest come in for him, with possibly a head-turning offer.
However, we can’t see the board letting any players go mid-season and we don’t think that any player would want to go before the job is finished.
