‘People manufacture stories’ – Exclusive: McLeish makes reveal after major Rangers-King update
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has paid tribute to Dave King after the former Rangers chairman struck a deal to sell all his shares to supporters group Club 1872.
According to The Times, Club 1872 will become the largest shareholder at Rangers with a stake of 25 per cent after a £13million deal was agreed to take King’s 20.3 per cent holding. Club 1872 already has a holding of 4.95 per cent.
King left the board at Ibrox earlier this year after overseeing a huge improvement to Rangers’ fortunes.
And McLeish is thankful for the work the South African businessman has done at the Light Blues, even though he admits that fabricated stories tried to bring him down.
“He’s done a really good job in there,” McLeish told Ibrox News. “There was always speculation every year about whether he was going to leave or whether he was going to sell up but he stuck in there for a considerable period of time.
“He’s got good guys in and about him. People manufacture stories. Some of it would be true and they would try to upset the apple cart but Dave King stayed really secure with all his ideas and knowledge.
“He goes with the appreciation of the Rangers fans.”
King has done so much good work to get the club out of the mud.
While Steven Gerrard’s side is running away at the top of the Scottish Premiership after King stepped down as chairman, there’s no denying that he is one of the main reasons as to why that happened.
Without King, would Rangers have hired Gerrard? Would they be where they are right now? There are massive doubts about that.
If this is the season in which the Gers win title number 55 then King will go down as one of the legends who made that happen.
He didn’t have to sell his stake to the fans but doing that is one of the greatest goodbyes you’re likely to see in Scottish football.
