‘How far Scottish journalism has fallen’ – Some Bears react to ‘insane’ journo post on King sale

Dave King confirmed that he would sell his 20.37% share in Rangers to fan group Club 1872 on Tuesday.

That would leave them as the biggest shareholder with a holding of over 25% – a significant number in terms of powers of veto.

Club 1872 have launched a £500 ‘legacy’ membership scheme to try to raise the £13m and need to boost numbers to 20,000 over the next three years to make the share purchase.

Herald and Times journalist Chris Jack posted that news on his Twitter account and it picked up a spiky response from fellow journalist Graham Spiers.

Spiers said, “Hearts fans raise £10 million…and give it to their club. Rangers fans being asked to raise £13 million…to hand to Dave King.”

Now, this is slightly disingenuous and plenty of Rangers fans replied to Spiers letting him know what they think.

King has every right to sell his shares and, providing Club 1872 can raise the funds, it will leave Rangers in a very strong position going forward.

King has invested plenty of his own money in Rangers through the years and is also prepared to take a small loss on the shares.

But it seems a big stretch to expect him to gift all of his shares back to the club or to Club 1872.

To be fair to Spiers, he has listened.

He came back with a follow-up tweet to say that he’s “happy to concede it might look a little unfair on Dave King.”

He still thinks there could have been another way to structure the deal, but if it’s not giving them away and it’s not paying for them, we’d love to know what he’s suggesting.

Perhaps he’s going to buy them and gift them to the Rangers fans?
