‘Unwell’ – Gerrard provides update on Rangers player who missed out v Benfica

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Joe Aribo does not have COVID-19 after he missed out against Benfica on Thursday.

Aribo was not well enough to feature in the Europa League at Ibrox, with the boss explaining that he was feeling unwell ahead of kick off.

The Gers drew 2-2 with Benfica in the Nigerian’s absence and Gerrard confirmed he could be available for their Scottish League Cup game against Falkirk on Sunday.

“Joe was unwell,” he said (via Glasgow Live).

“He had a stomach complaint last night. Hopefully he will be available for the weekend.

“It’s important to say it is not Covid-related. He was negative on his test, before people start putting two and two together”

The former Charlton Athletic man has impressed this season, playing in central midfield or on the right wing.

With four goals in eight league appearances, he has shown an impressive ability in front of goal, while he has completed 1.6 dribbles and 1.4 key passes per match on average (via WhoScored).

The recent form of Scott Arfield and the decision to put Kemar Roofe out wide has created added competition for Aribo, but given he is still just 24 years old he has plenty of time to improve.

One area Gerrard will likely want to see him develop in is his ability to retain possession. The Nigerian international is a dangerous dribbler and likes to try things when attacking, but he gives the ball away a little too often. No Rangers player has been dispossessed as much as Aribo, twice a match on average (via WhoScored), and while risk is needed in attack, it is area he can improve on.

However, whether as a starter or an impact substitute, he has been impressive this season and deserves a prominent place in the squad.
