‘Exceptional’ – Ally McCoist blown away by ‘Beautiful’ Rangers player in 2-2 v Benfica
Ally McCoist was waxing lyrical about Kemar Roofe on Thursday night after the Rangers forward scored yet another wondergoal in the Europa League.
Roofe, 27, netted his seventh goal of the season to put the Light Blues two goals ahead in their 2-2 draw against Benfica at Ibrox.
Earlier in the season, the former West Brom and Leeds attacker scored from his own half against Standard Liege.
And while that strike will take some beating for Rangers’ goal of the season award, Roofe might only be competing with himself after a stunning strike in the second half verus Benfica.
Speaking after the game, McCoist raved about the build-up play and the goal itself.
“What a goal,” said McCoist on BT Sport 3 on Thursday night.
“Beautiful play on the left-hand side involving [Borna] Barisic and [Glen] Kamara. But the finish is absolutely exceptional.”
BT Sport host Emma Dodds said: “He keeps on doing it, doesn’t he?”
McCoist replied: “Oh Emma, it’s beautiful.
“He looks up and brings his foot around the ball and it flies into the top corner.”
Roofe has now scored seven goals in 12 appearances across all competitions since joining Rangers from Anderlecht in the summer.
Four of those goals have come in his last three appearances after he endured a spell out on the sidelines with an injury.
Roofe’s injury issues were well document ahead of his arrival in Glasgow in August but the Walsall-born forward has proven time and time again that he can be a star player in this Rangers side.
At the moment, Roofe is looking undroppable.
However, you would imagine that Steven Gerrard will rest the 27-year-old – as well as other members of the first-team – for the Scottish League Cup clash against Falkirk on Sunday.
Falkirk may be leaders of the Scottish League One and are unbeaten in the league but they are a team Rangers’ second-string should be beating with an issue.
Next Thursday, the Gers welcome Standard Liege to Ibrox in a match that could secure qualification to the knock-out stages for the Scottish Premiership leaders.
Gerrard will definitely rest players in order to have them fresh for that game.
In other Rangers news, this young attacker has agreed a new contract at Ibrox.
