Benfica will be without nine first-team players for their Europa League clash against Rangers after Adel Taarabt became the latest player to test positive for COVID-19, according to Record.
The Portuguese side are facing a crisis ahead of their trip to Glasgow as manager Jorge Jesus will be forced to play a much-changed side.
Portuguese outlet Record are reporting that former Tottenham midfielder Taarabt is the latest Benfica player to test positive for the coronavirus after positive tests for Darwin Nunez and Julian Weigl earlier this week.
They also report that Andre Almeida, Nuno Tavares, Todibo, and Pedrinho will miss Thursday’s clash with injuries.
Nicolas Otamendi and Andreas Samaris are suspended for the tie at Ibrox meaning that Jesus has nine first-team players unavailable to him for the vital Europa League game.
This report will surely come as welcome news to Gers boss Steven Gerrard as his side face one of their trickiest tests of the season.
The Light Blues nearly snatched a win at Estadio da Luz when the side’s met before the international break as Rangers led by two goals with 15 minutes to play.
But two mistakes from Filip Helander allowed Benfica back into the game and the home side rallied to claim a 3-3 draw.
The Portuguese side face a different challenge at Ibrox however. The Gers have been irresistible at home this season and have won their last two home games by an aggregate score of 12-0.
A tough task for Benfica has just got tougher with their long list of absentees but Gers fans won’t care as they will be increasingly confident of a positive result against the Portuguese side.
