Rangers could be set to shell out seven-figure fee to Mike Ashley – Finance expert

Rangers could be due to pay a sum of money to Mike Ashley-owned Sports Direct, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

On Friday, the Gers’ full financial accounts were published and Maguire has been busy dissecting the key information from the report.

And he’s uncovered that Rangers might owe Ashley a sum of money.

While it’s unclear how much the Gers will actually have to pay the Newcastle United owner as the Scottish Premiership leaders are “reluctant to say how much” a worst-case scenario will be, they have said it could be £3million.

Maguire, however, adds on his personal Twitter account that it “could be more or less” than the £3million figure in the accounts.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Rangers’ controversial association with Sports Direct would be over due to contracts expiring.

Sports Direct ruled over the club shop at Ibrox before the end of last season after a seven-year deal was “littered with court cases and controversy”, according to the Daily Record.

Although Rangers have freed themselves from Ashley’s vice-like grip in one sense, it still seems that the toxic relationship between the Scottish giants and the Newcastle owner is still having an effect on the club’s business.

It remains to be seen how much will be paid to Ashley or whether it’s just Rangers planning for the worst by including that potential £3million loss in their accounts.

Either way, we just don’t want to see the English businessman’s name crop up any more in association with Rangers because he’s been nothing but a thorn in the side of the Light Blues throughout his seven-year business agreement.
