Despite being top of the league with 12 wins from their opening 14 Scottish Premiership matches, Chris Sutton is still not backing Rangers.
Writing ahead of this weekend, the former Celtic man claimed that if Hoops striker Odsonne Edouard hits top form, Neil Lennon’s side become title favourites.
He said (via Daily Record): “Ascending Odsonne Edouard hit top form for France under 21s this week but he now needs to bring his international A game back to Celtic as he holds the key to winning Ten In A Row. Edouard hits his peak, Celtic wins the league. It’s that simple for me.”
Now Edouard is a good player and Sutton is not wrong in saying that if he finds his best form, Celtic become a better side. While Rangers have undoubtedly made an excellent start to the season, their Old Firm rivals will only be three points adrift if they are able to win their two games in hand.
However, Rangers have been incredibly consistent so far this season, conceding just three goals and winning 12 of their opening 14 fixtures (via WhoScored). Steven Gerrard bulked out his squad over the summer and they have a number of options in midfield and up front, in addition to a league-best defence.
The Gers have already beaten Celtic at Parkhead this season and have shown their ability to win matches on a regular basis and keep a title-winning pace so far this season. Meanwhile, Gerrard’s side are unbeaten in the Europa League group stage and were unfortunate not to beat Benfica in Lisbon prior to the international break.
Whether Celtic improve or not, Rangers have the lead in the title race already. If the Gers are able to match their rivals’ record going forward they can win the league, regardless of how many goals Edouard scores. Furthermore, Celtic have been far less solid defensively, conceding 11 goals already in the league and nine in the Europa League.
Provided James Tavernier and Connor Goldson stay fit, Rangers have the squad to maintain this form for most of the season and Celtic will need to see Edouard play at his very best if they are going to keep pace.
