Gerrard explains why Jones & Edmundson remain Rangers players despite COVID controversy

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has explained his decision to keep Jordan Jones and George Edmundson at Ibrox after the pair broke COVID regulations.

The Gers duo attended a party outside of their respective households and they were swiftly suspended by the club.

Some fans called for the pair to be sacked by the club after their actions endangered the health of every player and staff member at Rangers.

Gerrard is quoted by The Daily Record as saying, “I spoke to them both individually and they were both very sad over the incident, they were remorseful, apologetic and full of regret.

“They first and foremost wanted to apologise to the supporters and their team-mates for their action. In my position, it was time to support these two players once I saw that reaction.

“It was the reaction I wanted to see. Now it’s about me giving them the support and managing them to come back to top players because they are good players, we need them here to help and support us moving forward.”

Jones is very lucky to still be a Gers player after his numerous behavioural issues in the past and fans must be wondering why he hasn’t been let go.

Neither player currently offers much to the Rangers squad as they share just six first-team appearances between them this season.

Perhaps Gerrard is trying to save face for the moment and we will see both players depart either in January or in the summer.

There is also the financial aspect as in all likelihood it won’t be cheap to terminate the contract of either player but if they had left instead of being suspended we doubt Gerrard’s squad would have suffered.

Both players were given seven-game bans by the Scottish FA on Thursday which means they face an even longer spell on the sidelines but we are sure that many Gers fans would be happy if neither player wore a Rangers shirt again.

In other Rangers news, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst has made a claim about the Gers’ Europa League chances.
