Benfica forward Darwin Nunez could miss his side’s Europa League tie with Rangers next week after returning a positive COVID test, according to a report in Publico.
The Uruguayan forward was the hero at Estadio da Luz when the two sides met before the international break.
He assisted Benfica’s second and scored their third as they completed an unlikely comeback against a Rangers side that looked home and dry with a late two-goal lead.
Publico are reporting that the 21-year-old forward and midfielder Julian Weigl could miss the return clash at Ibrox after contracting Coronavirus.
Weigl also played against the Gers before the international break but had a much smaller impact on the game than Nunez.
Both players will miss Benfica’s weekend tie against Paredes and it is unlikely that they will fly to Glasgow for next week’s crunch game.
With both clubs neck and neck at the top of their Europa League group, it would be a huge win for Rangers if they can improve on their performance from a few weeks ago and claim all three points against the Portuguese giants.
Nunez was the key man for Benfica in the 3-3 draw and his unavailability will come as a boost to a Rangers side that will be looking to take revenge after having a win stolen from them late on.
The Gers led 3-1 with just over 10 minutes to go before Benfica pulled two goals back through a Nunez goal and assist.
Steven Gerrard will have fancied his side’s chances against Benfica at Ibrox but this new report will give him even more reason to be optimistic heading into Thursday’s game.
