‘Tight’ – Exclusive: Pundit predicts massive Rangers v Aberdeen clash

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has predicted a tight victory for Rangers when they take on third-placed Aberdeen on Sunday at Ibrox.

He said that Derek McInnes has a good record of going to Ibrox and making it difficult for the Gers but claimed that Steven Gerrard’s men are just too strong for the contenders this season.

Rangers have a nine-point lead at the top of the Premiership and a victory on Sunday – in what some see as a very tough test – will take them another big step closer to the first silverware of the Gerrard regime.

Talking to Ibrox News McLeish said, “I’ve got to say, I played for Aberdeen for 18 years and I had a wonderful time up there. We went to Ibrox and won quite a lot.

“But I think this Rangers team is just too strong for the contenders at the moment, and especially at Ibrox, so I would favour Rangers to take the three points.

“Aberdeen can make it tight. Derek [McInnes] has got a good record of going to Ibrox and playing tight.

“He got a victory at Ibrox a couple of years ago by frustrating Rangers and nicking a goal.

“But Rangers are a much better team, much more confident, more fluent, quicker, they’re passing it quicker and they have the firepower to damage teams.

“If one striker isn’t firing then the other one can come in and that’s the big difference for Rangers for me this season.”

We’re expecting Alfredo Morelos to lead the line on Sunday after Jermain Defoe started in the last game against Hamilton.

That saw Rangers score eight goals and concede none and while their attacking verve has been brilliant this season, the Ger’s defence – that’s seen them concede just three in 14 games – is a big part of why they’re the big favourites to land the title this season.
