‘Terrifies them’ – Exclusive: McLeish delivers verdict on Gers ace ‘raging’ after 8-0 win
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has said that Jermain Defoe “still terrifies” defenders in the Premiership and has still got his legs.
Former Rangers ace Alan Hutton said Defoe would be “raging” after Rangers scored eight in the recent demolition job over Hamilton and the striker didn’t get one.
However, McLeish claimed that Defoe’s effect on defenders is such that even if he doesn’t score, he enables goals from other players.
Talking exclusively to Ibrox News McLeish said, “He’s still got his legs, there’s no worry about that.
“That goal we spoke about a few weeks ago, his movement, that’s all he needs. He only needs four or five feet to lose his defender.
“He played a great part in the Hamilton game and it was incredible not to see him among the goals when Rangers scored eight.
“But he still terrifies them, the defenders in the Premiership.
“And even when he’s not among the goals then while he’s terrifying defenders, other Rangers players can play under the radar and get the goals themselves, as we saw in the 8-0 win.”
The 38-year-old has only started two Premiership games for Rangers this season but he’s a fantastic option to have off the bench, or when rotation is needed.
He would still walk into any other Premiership side and we’re sure he’ll be back among the goals before too long.
