Rangers in ‘positive’ talks over new deal for attacker Gerrard is a ‘big fan’ of – report

Rangers have opened contract discussions with youngster Kai Kennedy with his current deal running out in the summer, according to Glasgow Live.

The 18-year-old is currently on loan at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and it appeared as though he may leave Ibrox at the end of the season upon the expiration of his current deal.

However, Glasgow Live understand that ‘productive discussions’ are ongoing regarding a new deal for the Scottish winger.

The report also claims that a ‘disagreement over playing time’ is why contract talks initially broke down earlier in the year but it added that Steven Gerrard is a “big fan” of the youngster.

Kennedy has made three appearances for Inverness this season after missing their first game of the season as he was in quarantine.

He is yet to register a goal or assist in his 173 minutes of action this season as the wait goes on for his first senior goal.

In the summer The Daily Record reported that Champions League winners Bayern Munich and Manchester City were interested in signing Kennedy as his contract dispute developed.

The quality of the teams interested in signing Kennedy puts into perspective how highly rated the young winger is while also highlighting how important it is for Rangers to keep hold of him.

The 18-year-old has already represented Scotland’s under 21 side and Steven Gerrard could be looking at introducing Kennedy to the Gers first team next season.

With high profile clubs sniffing around, Kennedy will need assurances that first-team football in on the horizon if he is to remain at Ibrox.

But the fact that he is in discussions with the club is positive and suggests he would like to stay.
