Ibrox view: Massive – Rangers must secure new contract for 27y/o before Jan
Connor Goldson has been outstanding for Rangers this season and it is no wonder that the club are keen to tie him down to a new contract.
With his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2022 (via Transfermarkt), Football Insider have reported that Rangers are keen to tie him down to new terms.
Aged 27, Goldson is in the prime of his career and has become a crucial part in the club’s success so far this term, starting every match in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League group stage.
Alongside captain James Tavernier and left-back Borna Barisic, he plays a crucial role in making Rangers’ defence the best in the division, with just three goals conceded from their opening 14 matches.
Up until a bizarre evening in Lisbon against Benfica earlier this month, Rangers were yet to concede in the Europa League group stage, but after a tough night for the Gers defence, Goldson was quick to show his leadership qualities.
Filip Helander experienced a difficult evening where he was exposed for all three goals, but the former Brighton and Hove Albion man stood by his teammate and backed him to make an immediate return to form.
Goldson said (via Daily Record): “I think he will put it straight behind him because you never see Fil too high or too low after a game of football. He is just not that kind of player, and neither am I. You need that mindset.”
Aside from his role as a leader in this side, Goldson is an excellent player who seems to be improving all the time.
The Rangers man ranks third in the entire division in terms of passes per game, while he provides 0.9 key passes per match from centre-back (via WhoScored). With 2.9 clearances per match on average he has more than any of his teammates, while he has won far more aerial duels than any other Rangers player (via WhoScored).
Given the success he has enjoyed at Ibrox in recent years it would be no surprise to see him agree to new deal, but it is good to see that the club are treating the situation with a sense of urgency.
