Ross Wilson: Rangers summer signing ‘loves being’ at Ibrox, has ‘smile on his face every day’
Ross Wilson has said that summer signing Calvin Bassey ‘loves being’ at Rangers after signing from Premier League side Leicester in the summer.
He also said that both he and Steven Gerrard are “delighted” with his progress at the club.
Talking on a fan Q&A Wilson said, “We’re delighted with Calvin, Steven and I were discussing him the other day, we love his personality first and foremost.
“He’s in here with a smile on his face every day. He loves being here. He loves the opportunity that’s been afforded to him at Rangers.
“There’s a lot of talent out there and the key for us is that our scouting network can identify these opportunities.
“I mentioned it has to align with the squad plan. In the summer we were looking to change the make-up of our full-back positions and Calvin ticked that box.
“There are lots of players like that and we need to make sure our scouts know them strongly but there’s no point anyone coming here if Steven isn’t 100% behind them.”
Homegrown and best of rest
The Rangers scouting network has been on fire recently with some fantastic bargains snapped up.
Glen Kamara for £50k might be the biggest of the lot but Bassey is snapping at his heels.
He cost just over £200k in compensation.
The 20-year-old couldn’t force his way into the Leicester first team after coming up through the ranks there but he’s already made eight appearances for the Gers. No wonder he’s smiling so much.
It means that behind established full-backs James Tavernier and Borna Barisic, Gerrard has exciting youngsters Nathan Patterson and Bassey behind them.
Both are more than capable of playing for the first-team and it means that in what could be the most gruelling season to date, Gerrard has real cover across the whole of his squad.
Bringing homegrown talent through like Patterson is vital but scoring Europe for the best of the rest is another vital part of Wilson’s job.
