Rangers player will miss international due to new Covid-19 rules – report

Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell has explained that Rangers defender Filip Helander will not travel to Denmark with his national side due to new UK COVID restrictions.

Helander was selected in Sweden’s most recent national squad for their upcoming games against Denmark, Croatia and France.

But the 27-year-old will not travel to Denmark after a new strain of COVID-19 was found in the country and new rules mean that anyone returning to the UK from Denmark will have to quarantine for 14 days.

Campbell confirmed on Twitter that Helander wouldn’t travel to Denmark for Wednesday’s friendly match.

If Helander did travel to Denmark he would miss his side’s upcoming games against Aberdeen and Benfica while he was quarantining.

Helander played no part in Rangers’ 8-0 demolition of Hamilton on Sunday following his less than impressive display in Portugal.

Leon Balogun started the weekend’s game instead of Helander and with key matches coming up in the near future we may see Balogun continue to partner Connor Goldson in the heart of the Gers defence.

The Swede isn’t a bad defender but he made some crucial errors in what could prove to be a huge game for the Light Blues.

Perhaps an international break has come at the right time for Helander as he has time to get himself away from Rangers and come back with a new mindset ahead of hectic festive schedule.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist has issued a Gers transfer update that will worry some Bears fans.
