Gerrard details ‘most pleasing thing’ after 8-0 Hamilton thrashing

Steven Gerrard has declared what pleased him most about his Rangers side’s 8-0 demolition of Hamilton Academical on Sunday.

Goals from Scott Arfield and Brandon Barker plus braces from Kemar Roofe, Joe Aribo and James Tavernier gave the Gers an emphatic win which kept them nine points clear of Celtic at the top of the table.

But it wasn’t the goals that pleased Gerrard the most on Sunday as the Gers boss hailed his side’s substitutes.

Gerrard is quoted by The Scottish Sun as saying, “I made five changes today, brought five subs on and it didn’t affect our level of performance. That is the most pleasing thing for me.

“It is about Rangers trying to be as strong for as long as we can and be as consistent as we can. It was a very impressive performance, a strong win and another clean sheet.

“The thing that pleased me the most was the standards that we maintained from start to finish. I have been on to these players, probably on to them too much, about keeping standards no matter what stage the game is at.”

As you may have noticed, in those quotes Gerrard actually claims that two separate things pleased him most about Sunday’s performance. The Gers boss was speaking after his side had just won 8-0 so it’s fair to say he was happy with many aspects of his team’s performance.

The two things are linked as Gerrard is suggesting that the quality of his side’s performance stayed the same despite him bringing on five substitutes.

His side scored four goals in each half which suggests that the quality was at a similar level all game, just the response the Gers needed after Thursday’s disappointment against Benfica.

Gerrard will be pleased that Bongani Zungu got his first minutes as a Rangers player as he came on at half time for Ryan Jack. The South African presents another quality midfield option for Gerrard as it looks like he has a squad that is capable of fighting on multiple fronts.

In other Rangers news, Davie Provan has made an extraordinary claim about Rangers fans.
