David Ornstein delivers transfer update on Rangers-linked free agent
The Athletic have issued an update on the future of Jack Wilshere as the former West Ham man is still searching for a club after being linked with Rangers in the summer.
Wilshere left the Hammers on deadline day after his contract with the London club was terminated.
The 28-year-old was linked with a move to Rangers with journalist Nicolo Schira claiming that the Gers were in advanced talks for the former Arsenal man.
Writing on The Athletic, David Ornstein said, “Wilshere is understood to have received several proposals from various countries but a deal is not thought to be close and he turned down an opportunity in Australia.”
Perhaps Wilshere is hoping for a move a little closer to home after turning down a move down under, though it remains to be seen if the Gers are still interested in the services of the England international.
The Light Blues were after a new midfielder in the summer but they secured the services of Bongani Zungu on deadline day who seemingly fits the bill.
The South African got his first Gers minutes under his belt in his new side’s 8-0 win over Hamilton Academical as the 28-year-old replaced Ryan jack at half time.
There is no doubting that Wilshere would be a quality addition to Steven Gerrard’s squad but there will always be questions over the midfielder’s fitness as he has suffered numerous long term injuries in the past.
He would also command high wages.
The Gers also have a plethora of quality midfield options at the moment meaning there isn’t really much point in signing the ex-Arsenal man.
Should the Gers lose one of their midfielders in January however, Gerrard could do a lot worse than signing his former England teammate as a short term replacement.
