Gerrard confirms Rangers contract update on player in ‘scintillating form’
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has said he will discuss a new contract with Steven Davis ‘when the time is right’ after the midfielder’s outstanding form this season.
The Northern Ireland international was on top form in Rangers’ Europa League draw with Benfica in midweek and Gerrard seems keen to tie down the 35-year-old as his contract expires at the end of this season.
But, Gerrard has explained that it is ‘too early’ to talk about extending Davis’ contract and admitted any discussions between the club and the player will remain private.
Gerrard is quoted by The Daily Record as saying, “I was asked about Steven after the game and my answer was that he was in scintillating form. He is a top professional, fantastic to work with and we need to try and keep Steven in this place between now and the end of the season.
“If we do, I am sure he will contribute to the team well. But it is too early to discuss contracts at the moment. When the time is right we will discuss Steven’s future in private. And then when there is an update we will tell you.”
Davis has made 15 competitive appearances this season and has been key as Gerrard has rotated his midfield to deal with the congested fixture list.
Davis will be 36 on new years day and some may question why Gerrard is keen to extend the contract of a player who is nearing the end of his career. But Davis has proved to be a valuable player at Ibrox this season and is a brilliant squad player as an absolute minimum.
Younger midfielders such as Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara can still learn a great deal from Davis who is one of the most experienced players in the Ibrox squad, perhaps behind only Allan McGregor.
Davis could still prove to be a valuable player at Ibrox this season as it looks as if the Gers will qualify for the knockout rounds of the Europa League. This means at the end of this season the Light Blues will be challenging for European glory and domestic success.
In the games where a lot is on the line, Davis will provide a calm head in the middle of the pitch and he is a player the younger squad members can look to for confidence. Signing Davis even for an extra year would be a good move.
