‘So reliable’ – Conor Goldson backs Rangers ace to bounce back after shocker v Benfica

Conor Goldson has backed Rangers teammate Filip Helander to bounce back quickly from his poor performance against Benfica on Thursday.

The colossal Swede made a number of different mistakes in Portugal, as the Gers threw away a 3-1 lead to draw in their Europa League clash.

It’s not the first time Helander has come out of games with criticism this season, although Steven Gerrard has praised him previously.

Goldson has broken silence on his partner at Ibrox, claiming he is usually reliable and will be back to his best if chosen against Hamilton.

“I think he will put it straight behind him because you never see Fil too high or too low after a game of football,” he told the Daily Record.

“Even after Old Firms or big European nights where we have kept clean sheets, I have never seen him bouncing off walls after the game. He is just not that kind of player, and neither am I. You need that mindset.

“He has played so many games and is usually so steady and so reliable.”

Many Rangers fans have already called for Leon Balogun to return to the starting XI against Hamilton on Sunday, giving Helander the rest he could need.

Gerrard certainly has a decision to make, and Ally McCoist would most likely back the change after watching the ‘disastrous’ defending on Thursday.

Helander lost the ball five times in his own half in the draw and was only successful with 45% of his defensive duels according to WyScout.

The Swede isn’t in the best run of his career so far, and it could be smart to keep him out of the spotlight this weekend.
