‘Phenomenal’ – Tam McManus heaps praise on Rangers star after 3-3 v Benfica

Former BBC Sportsound pundit Tam McManus hailed “phenomenal” Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos after he scored his record 22nd European goal for the club.

The Colombian scored as Rangers drew 3-3 with Benfica on Thursday night, breaking Ally McCoist’s club record in the process.

Morelos has made a slow start to the season in the league, but has now scored in consecutive Europa League matches and was a constant thorn in the side of the Benfica backline.

In light of his achievement, former Hibernian attacker Tam McManus was quick to praise the 24-year-old on social media.

“Got to tip your hat to Alfredo Morelos,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Phenomenal goal scoring record in Europe for Rangers. Great achievement.”

Impressive turnaround

With Benfica down to 10 men at the Estadio da Luz and sitting back into a deep block, Morelos was a constant menace, with his intelligent movement causing them consistent problems.

His goal was a great example of this and with quality crossers of the ball like James Tavernier, Borna Barisic and Ryan Kent, he should now look to kick on and recapture his very best form.

At the start of the year speculation about his future looked to be affecting his performance levels, but Steven Gerrard feels that he is starting to look sharper and fitter with his future likely resolved until at least January (via The Herald).

Following the meeting with Benfica, Gerrard said it was his best performance of the season and the stats certainly back this up.

In 90 minutes, he scored a goal and provided an assist, completed one dribble, took four shots and delivered two key passes. He also made one tackle and one clearance, while he completed 92% of his passes (via WhoScored).
