‘Mental’, ‘What a player… outstanding’ – These Bears blown away by ‘superb’ Gers ace v Benfica
Rangers kept up their unbeaten record this season with a fantastic 3-3 draw with Benfica but it could and should have been so much more.
Benfica hadn’t lost at home in the Europa League for 10 years but came oh so close last night after Rangers came back from conceding an early goal to winning 3-1.
Nicolas Otamendi got sent off after Connor Goldson’s early own goal and goals from Diogo Goncalves (own goal), Glen Kamara and Alfredo Morelos sent Rangers fans into delirium.
It wasn’t quite enough and Darwin Nunez levelled in injury time to keep Benfica top of the league.
However, the one thing Benfica couldn’t take away from Rangers was Morelos’ record-breaking strike.
Morelos’ goal took him past Ally McCoist’s long-standing European record and plenty of Gers fans were ready to praise their star striker on Twitter.
After looking a bit out of sorts in the early parts of this season, Morelos now looks bang at it again and that’s even better news for Rangers than his record.
Last night might have been a disappointment but that just shows how far the Gers squad has come under Gerrard this season. Benfica are a great side.
It’s Hamilton next for Rangers as they bid to keep powering on across the two big competitions of the season.
Meanwhile, here are the best reactions to Alf’s display last night…
