‘Magnificent deal’ – Exclusive: McLeish does u-turn on Rangers star he was not convinced about
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has said that he didn’t see the potential in Glen Kamara to start with but has completely u-turned after watching him in recent games.
Rangers signed the 25-year-old midfielder for a rock-bottom £50,000 after agreeing a pre-contract deal that would have seen him move for free in the summer.
In the end, Rangers paid £50,000 to bring the move forward, signing him in January 2019 for the bargain fee.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News McLeish said, “When I first saw him I wondered what Stevie was seeing in this guy.
“At first, it took him a while to integrate into the Old Firm ferocity and with all the expectations at Ibrox.
“But, in the recent games I’ve watched him in, for Rangers and in internationals, I’ve seen the potential that Steven and the Rangers scouts obviously saw in him.
“So hats off to them, it’s a magnificent deal.
“I wonder if there’s a caveat in there and that Dundee might get something for him if he moves on from Rangers.
“Saying that, I hope he doesn’t leave Rangers anytime soon. He’s a wonderful player.”
The £50,000 fee is a head-turner but the reality is that a deal had already been agreed with the player to join for free the following summer.
However, whichever way you look at it, Rangers spotted the potential and have landed a player worth at least 100x his fee.
That’s exceptionally good business and shows why Gers have stolen a march on their rivals this season.
