‘Machine’, ‘Outstanding’ – Many Rangers fans awestruck by ace after ‘cracker’ v Benfica
Rangers endured heartbreak on Thursday evening, conceding in injury time to draw 3-3 against Benfica in the Europa League.
An own goal and strikes from Glen Kamara and Alfredo Morelos had put the Gers ahead, but it wasn’t to be in the end.
That draw has seen Steven Gerrard’s men stay top of their group – something which could have a massive saying in later rounds.
Morelos grabbed most of the headlines, with his third goal taking him ahead of Ally McCoist’s record for goals in Europe.
The Colombian takes many of the plaudits, but it was skipper James Tavernier who he can thank for his role in the goal.
Known for his attacking skill, Tavernier once again got forward and whipped in an inch-perfect delivery for Morelos to tap home.
We’ve got used to seeing the captain get involved in goals, as he adds another assist to his 10 goals already this season.
Tavernier also played the cross that was deflected into his own goal by Cupido Goncalves to get the Gers back on track early on.
Many Rangers fans have reacted to the performance of their skipper in Portugal, as he once again led by example despite the disappointment.
The majority wanted to point the spotlight on him for his role in Morelos’ record-breaking goal, praising his composure in the critical area.
