‘Disastrous’ – Ally McCoist tears apart Rangers duo after ‘shocking’ night v Benfica
Ally McCoist has slammed Rangers duo Conor Goldson and Filip Helander after the 3-3 draw in the Europa League against Benfica.
The Gers somehow threw away all three points despite being 3-1 ahead with the home side having 10 men for nearly 70 minutes in Portugal.
McCoist claimed Helander was poor for the entire game, but defensively as a whole, the usually solid partnership were “shocking.”
McCoist claimed all three goals were avoidable and despite not losing, believes Steven Gerrard will be far from happy with his defence.
“Helander, who had a pretty poor night all round, gives away the ball for the first goal here. Disastrous start inside the first minute,” he said on BT Sport, via the Daily Record.
“You’ve got to be honest and say for the first two goals Rangers were defensively shocking.
“Even for the third one, it’s a great run from Darwin but I think the two central defenders, one of them, I think Goldson must step across. When Darwin takes the yard off of Helander, Goldson must step across, either block him or stop the run.”
It was a shocking ending to an evening that could have been famous.
Benfica had never lost at home in the Europa League before, and the Bears were cruising to all three points with ease after the hour mark.
Helander has been shaky for two games on the bounce now and didn’t come out of the win at Kilmarnock with many plaudits.
Goldson, on the other hand, has been superb all season and this could be classed as his first off-day in quite some time.
Gerrard has a decision to make on Sunday, and it would be no surprise to see Leon Balogun brought out of the cold against Hamilton.
