‘What has baffled me…’ – Chris Sutton delivers verdict on incident with Rangers ‘Clowns’

Chris Sutton has criticised the Scottish government over their response to the news that Rangers have suspended Jordan Jones and George Edmundson.

The Gers pair were suspended after they broke COVID-19 guidelines to attend a party and the Scottish government praised the Ibrox club for their response.

Speaking on the Record Celtic podcast, Sutton branded Jones and Edmundson as ‘clowns’ while criticising how the government has ‘changed it’s tune’ regarding football and COVID-19.

He said, “First of all the players, what a couple of clowns they are. Steven Gerrard and the Rangers hierarchy must be absolutely furious with the whole thing. It seems like Rangers have handled the situation really well.

“What has baffled me, absolutely baffled me, is the Scottish Government commending Rangers on that yet with Celtic and Aberdeen, the Scottish Government rounded on them. All this yellow card stuff and what have you? It’s remarkable how they’ve changed their tune.

“Most people across Scotland will find that as a real head-scratcher, but a lot of things that have happened up there have been like that.”

Earlier this year Nicola Sturgeon said that Scottish football was on a ‘yellow’ card after Celtic’s Boli Bolingoli took a trip to Spain, breaking COVID regulations. The Belgian didn’t inform anyone at Celtic of his trip and he endangered the health of everyone at the club.

Bolignoli was given a five-game ban by the SFA with two of those games suspended, but the Belgian was never suspended by Celtic which perhaps answers Sutton’s question about why the government chose to commend Rangers for their action.

Jones and Edmundson were immediately suspended and they could potentially be fired from Ibrox. Bolingoli is still a Celtic player, albeit on loan in Turkey. It is clear that the government were pleased that the Gers didn’t wait for the SFA to take action against one of their players and this is why they were commended, not due to some imaginary bias as Sutton alludes to.

In other Rangers news, Benfica’s manager has made a bold prediction regarding the Gers’ chances of qualifying for the knockout rounds of the Europa League.
