‘If I am being honest…’ – Ferguson makes claim about Gers disgraced duo after club statement
Former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has said that he wouldn’t sack Jordan Jones and George Edmundson after the Ibrox pair broke COVID-19 protocols.
Rangers released a statement on Tuesday stating that Jones and Edmundson have both been ‘suspended pending an internal investigation’ because of their actions.
But speaking to the Go Radio Football Show (Monday, November 2), Ferguson said that he wouldn’t terminate the contracts of the pair despite their reckless actions.
He said, “Look, I don’t think I would sack them to be honest with you. I have let it digest for four or five hours. They’ve made a silly mistake and I think the manager will clearly discipline them. There is no doubt in my mind about that.
“They might not play for a while at Rangers and they need to learn from their lessons but I don’t think I would sack them. As I said I am more disappointed than angry if I am being honest”.
Some Gers fans have called for Jones and Edmundson to be sacked by the club but it remains to be seen what action the club will take.
Neither player has had much first-team experience this season with the pair making six appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side between them.
Jones looked to have jump-started his Ibrox career after scoring a great goal against Motherwell earlier this season but just as it looked as if he was working his way into Gerrard’s plans he has made a colossal mistake.
Edmundson has struggled to earn a place in the starting 11 this season as the Gers are blessed with several quality centre-backs at the moment.
We think it would be fair if Rangers decided to fire Jones and Edmundson as they have shown a complete lack of judgement with their actions and endangered the health of everyone at the club.
In other Rangers news, Benfica manager Jorge Jesus’ crowd request for his side’s tie against the Gers has been denied by the Portuguese government.
