Gerrard delivers update on futures of disgraced Rangers duo
Steven Gerrard has suggested that Jordan Jones and George Edmundson won’t be sacked by Rangers for breaking COVID protocols as they will be ‘punished internally’.
Jones and Edmundson were both suspended by Rangers on Tuesday because of their actions and some fans have called for the pair to be sacked by the club.
Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell tweeted Gerrard’s quotes as the Rangers boss said he wants to ‘draw a line’ under the incident.
Gerrard said, “They’ve let themselves, their families, team-mates and the supporters down. They’ve made a bad, bad error of judgement and think they’ll regret it for quite some time. It’s a building process for both of those players now.
“They’ll be punished internally… but I want to draw a line under it. I don’t want to sit here and kick them even more. They’re feeling really down at the moment, they’re apologetic, they’re remorseful and they’re full of regret.
“They’ll have to take their medicine and take their punishment like men. I’m sure at some point they’re going to have to give their teammates an explanation.”
The actions of the Ibrox duo were not only stupid but incredibly dangerous. If one or both of them had contracted coronavirus and passed it on to other people at Rangers it could have spelled disaster for the club.
Jones and Edmundson have only made six first team appearances between them this season so it wouldn’t be too much of a loss if the Gers did decide to sack the pair, it would be interesting to see how Rangers would’ve responded if it was a regular first team player who had made this mistake.
And that’s exactly what this is, a mistake, and maybe it is too harsh to terminate the contracts of two men who have made an error of judgement. It certainly seems that Gerrard sees it that way as looks set to keep the pair in his Ibrox squad.
