Kris Boyd wowed by ‘Unbelievable’ Rangers player in 1-0 win v Kilmarnock
Kris Boyd was waxing lyrical about James Tavernier’s penalty technique after the Rangers right-back scored his 10th goal of the season in the Gers’ XXX Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday.
It was a stonewall penalty for the Gers in the first half after Ross Millen’s blatant handball.
Tavernier, 29, stood up to take the spot-kick and powered the ball past Kilmarnock’s goalkeeper Danny Rogers.
Tavernier’s goalscoring record for Rangers this season has been quite something with his strike taking his tally to six in the Scottish Premiership – only Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson [8] and Hibernian’s Kevin Nisbet [7] have more in the top-flight.
Speaking at half-time, former Rangers and Kilmarnock striker Boyd heaped praise on the way that Tavernier is able to strike the ball from 12-yards out.
“I must say, the penalty was, once again, unbelievable from James Tavernier,” Boyd said on Sky Sports Main Event on Sunday [12:51pm].
“The technique to get over it, a lot of people when they run up to the ball you smash it as hard as you can. That’s the easiest way to get power out of it.
“Tavernier seems to whip around it to give it power. That’s in the side net before Rogers actually dives.
“It’s an unbelievable technique he’s got.”
One of the thing that amazes us about Tavernier is not just his ability to score from the penalty spot but also his overall performance at right-back.
The former Newcastle full-back is easily one of the most dangerous attacking threats that Rangers have because he likes to play so far up the pitch.
He’s always an option on the right, he can also whip a superb cross into the penalty area and he has got better and better at his defensive duties while Steven Gerrard has been in charge.
We have been thoroughly enjoying watching Rangers play this season and part of that is down to how well Tavernier has performed.
In other Rangers news, fans were drooling over this player’s display against Killie.
