‘That’s the difference’ – Ferguson details why Morelos hasn’t matched McCoist in Europe yet
Barry Ferguson has said that despite Alfredo Morelos matching Ally McCoist’s European goalscoring record, he needs to do it in the Champions League to properly match the Rangers legend.
The Colombian equalled McCoist’s record by scoring his 21st European goal for Rangers on Thursday night, as his header saw the Gers beat Polish side Lech Poznan 1-0.
Speaking in The Daily record, Ferguson said that because Morelos’ goals all came in the Europa League, he hasn’t truly matched the Ibrox legend.
He said, “Listen I really like Morelos and what he brings to Rangers. There’s no doubt he will break that goal tally and hopefully he will get the chance to do it in the top competition in years come.
“He has some way to go before matching Coisty’s levels. I had a good chuckle when Coisty reminded everyone on Thursday that most of his goals were in the Champions League.
“That’s the difference – he was at the top level. Morelos can get there too if he takes a bit of that on board and shows a bit more consistency. And as Steven Gerrard said, he needs to start winning things, and regularly”.
Morelos hasn’t quite performed at the level he, or Rangers fans, are used to this season. The 24-year-old has six goals in 14 games this term which isn’t a bad return, but the Colombian has some way to go if he is to match the 29 goals he managed in all competitions last season before the league was curtailed.
He came off the bench to break an eight game game drought with his goal on Thursday night as once again he proved to be the vital man in Europe for the Light Blues. Morelos will be looking to start when Rangers take on Benfica in their next Europa League game in what could prove to be the Gers’ trickiest group tie.
Morelos may also be rewarded with a start when his side take on Kilmarnock on Sunday as he looks to help Rangers pull further away from Celtic at the top of the table.
