‘So important’ – Exclusive: McLeish claims Gerrard has solved big problem at Rangers
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has said that Steven Gerrard has real options in attack now, after having a problem there since he arrived at Ibrox.
Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten were signed over the summer and Jermain Defoe is still scoring for Gerrard.
Between them, they’ve fired Rangers to the top of the Premiership where they currently have a six-point lead over Celtic.
Talking exclusively to Ibrox News McLeish said, “Steven Gerrard doesn’t have a first choice striker now – he’s got real options.
“In the past, it’s been a real problem for him. Sometimes Defoe wasn’t fit enough, sometimes Morelos wasn’t fit enough. Sometimes Morelos was suspended.
“Strikers are so important when you’re going for titles. You must have a good striker.
“Roofe is now finding his feet. He’s using his strength to get defenders out of the way. He scored an amazing goal in the Europa game.
“That’s an indication of how he’s looking. It would be nice to see Itten get to a similar level and then Gerrard will really be spoiled for choice.”
Both Rangers and Celtic have scored 28 goals in just 12 games in the Premiership.
The real difference is that the Gers have only conceded three goals and are now the bookies favourites to win the title.
