‘Ridiculous’ – Rangers summer signing makes ‘unbelievable’ Old Firm claim
Rangers striker Kemar Roofe said that support in the Old Firm derby is “ridiculous” and said he cannot wait to play at a “full Ibrox”.
The 27-year-old arrived from Anderlecht in the summer and is yet to feature in front of the Rangers fans live due to the current restrictions on fans entering the stadium.
Speaking to The Times, Roofe referenced an Old Firm derby from 1939 where an Ibrox record 118,567 fans attended the match.
“I knew straight away when I had the tour of the stadium and saw in the museum all the pictures, the trophies, medals,” he said.
“I got told there was one Old Firm clash . . . and it had 120,000 fans there, that is ridiculous.”
He added: “I can’t wait to be playing at a full Ibrox, a sell-out every game. Imagine playing in front of 55,000, getting the three points, even scoring, that will be an unbelievable feeling. A lot of Premier League teams don’t get 55,000.”
Missing the fans
While Rangers have certainly made an impressive start to the season, with 10 wins from their opening 12 Scottish Premiership matches, the lack of atmosphere has been a real miss.
Furthermore, with Rangers looking to end Celtic’s nine-year stranglehold on the title, it would be incredibly unfortunate if there was no passionate Ibrox crowd to witness them lifting the trophy.
However, Roofe and boss Steven Gerrard will be primarily focused on the pitch and in particular this Sunday’s clash with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
Killie have won four of their last six Premiership fixtures, scoring 10 goals in the process.
Attackers Chris Burke and Nicke Kabamba have notched eight goals between them in the league and they will be looking to apply threat to Rangers backline, which has been so impressive this season, with just three goals conceded in the league (via WhoScored).
As far as Roofe is concerned, he has plenty of competition from Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe for the number nine shirt.
He has scored two goals in just six league appearances so far, so he will just be waiting for the opportunity to stake his claim (via WhoScored).
