‘In a strange way…’ – Boyd explains why Rangers fans should be happy if Celtic beat Dons
Former Rangers forward Kris Boyd has explained why he thinks some Gers fans will be happy if Celtic reach the Scottish Cup final this weekend.
The Hoops take on Aberdeen on Sunday in a Scottish Cup semi-final that should’ve taken place months ago but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s Scottish Cup will be concluded in December, eight months after originally planned.
Speaking in the Scottish Sun, Boyd has explained that Celtic adding another game to their busy fixture list would be good news for Rangers.
He said, “In a strange way, I think a lot of the club’s fans wouldn’t mind Celtic winning at Hampden. It would mean another game in an already-crammed fixture list for Neil Lennon’s men and force them to rearrange yet another league match.
“There would also be the potential for Rangers to be 12 points clear ahead of the next Old Firm clash at Ibrox. Yes, Celtic would have games in hand but playing catch-up is never easy and I know what position I would rather be in”.
Although progression to a cup final would give Celtic another opportunity to win silverware before Rangers, there is no doubting that adding another fixture into the Hoops’ schedule could cause havoc for the Gers’ rivals.
Like Rangers, Celtic are currently fighting for the title and trying to reach the knockout rounds of the Europa League. But unlike the Gers, the Hoops aren’t unbeaten this season and look to be struggling with regularly playing three games of football in a week.
On Thursday they surrendered a two-goal lead to Lille in Europe late on in the game. This clearly shows that Neil Lennon’s side are struggling with fitness and adding another game to their schedule can only benefit Rangers.
Steven Gerrard’s side have had no such problems in Europe as they maintained their unbeaten record this term with a 1-0 win over Polish side Lech Poznan on Thursday with the winning goal coming from Alfredo Morelos.
In other Rangers news, a Lech Poznan defender has heavily criticised the Gers after their narrow loss to the Ibrox club on Thursday.
