‘Delighted’ – Rangers star opens up on prospect of signing new contract at Ibrox
Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara believes he can “continue getting better” amid ongoing speculation about his new contract with the club.
The Finnish international has impressed since arriving at the club in 2019, making 69 appearances in all competitions.
With his contract set to expire in 2023, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been pushing for the club to offer him new terms.
However, with Leeds United and Borussia Dortmund reportedly keeping tabs on his progress, Kamara remains non-committal on the subject of his future.
“It’s definitely nice to hear that the manager wants a new contract for me,” said Kamara (via The Scotsman).
“He’s a big manager and I’m always delighted to have that kind of praise from him. But I’m focused on my football and whatever happens from there [in terms of a contract] will happen.”
He added: “I feel confident, I feel good. I just feel like I’m playing at a good level right now and hopefully I can continue getting better. I guess the more games you play, you get more confident and you get more accustomed to everyone around you. I’m excited to be here and hopefully I can just carry it on.”
Key piece of the puzzle
Since arriving in January 2019 from Dundee, Kamara has slowly grown into one of Rangers’ most important players.
A metronomic passer who has attempted 72.8 passes per game on average in the Scottish Premiership this season, at a 91.6% success rate, he also contributes in attack and defence (via WhoScored).
Rangers have scored 22 of their 28 Scottish Premiership goals this season with Kamara on the pitch, while only four players have completed 90 minutes more often (via FBRef).
With his contract not set to expire for another two and a half years, Rangers still have time to come to an agreement. Of course, their ongoing success on the pitch will be important, but as Celtic are finding at the moment with Odsonne Edouard, it can be tough to keep hold of your best players when clubs like Dortmund become interested.
