‘No excuse’ – Ally McCoist blasts Rangers star over two incidents in win v Lech Poznan
Ally McCoist let rip at Rangers forward Kemar Roofe at half-time during Thursday night’s 1-0 win against Lech Poznan in the Europa League.
Roofe, 27, was the talk of Europe last week when he scored a stunning last-minute goal from his own half in the 2-0 win away at Standard Liege.
However, the former Leeds and West Brom man was unable to continue his heroics at Ibrox this week when he botched at attempted bicycle kick at goal and also gifted Lech Poznan possession to spring a counter-attack they almost scored from.
Rangers legend McCoist was less than pleased by Roofe’s blase approach in the opening 45 minutes where he over-thought two key incidents.
When talking about the moment Roofe took an easy chance off Ryan Kent to attempt a bicycle kick, McCoist said on BT Sport 3 on Thursday night: “Not only was he not ready, he should have left it for Kent coming in.
“I’ll cut him a little bit of slack but I think he’s maybe expecting [Thomas] Rogne to get a touch there and he doesn’t.
“Now, there’s no excuse for him here. This is Kent’s ball all day and he tries as the overhead kick.
“I know he scored a brilliant goal the other week, a fantastic goal. But that is Kent’s to hit all day.”
McCoist continued hitting out at Roofe when discussing the moment the Gers forward lost the ball before a Poznan attack.
The BT Sport pundit said: “It’s just slackness.
“I don’t know why he tries it with the outside of his foot. It’s just a side-footed pass to [Glen] Kamara that [causes] all sorts of problems. You’re bang open to the counter-attack.”
McCoist wasn’t the only one who was disappointed by Roofe’s performance against Lech Poznan with a lot of Gers fans taking to Twitter to vent their frustration about the 27-year-old.
When Rangers signed Roofe from Anderlecht in the summer, we were worried about Roofe’s injury record and the fact that he wasn’t the most consistent of forwards during his spell at Leeds.
Last week he was scoring one of the best goals in Rangers’ European history and this week he’s having a shocker.
When he tried that bicycle kick in the first half, we felt as though the ex-Leeds man was just trying too hard to match what he did against Liege.
Kent would have had a good chance at scoring if Roofe just left the ball for him and Stevem Gerrard should have been furious with that at half time.
But the blase approach when in possession was also frustrating when he just gifted Poznan the ball to spring an attack.
The more you think about it, the more you realise the Gers were a bit lucky in that match.
In other Rangers news, the Gers want to sign this Liverpool-born Premier League player on a cut-price deal.
