Gerrard hails ‘incredible’ Rangers 24y/o for equalling long-standing record
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard hailed striker Alfredo Morelos as “incredible” after he equalled Ally McCoist’s club record for European goals.
The Colombian forward’s goal was the difference on Thursday night, as the club edged past Polish side Lech Poznan 1-0 in the Europa League.
The goal was Morelos’ 21st for Rangers in European competition, with the boss urging him to now help the club add a trophy.
“Incredible, incredible,” said Gerrard (via The Daily Record).
“Ally McCoist is a legend of the club. I’ve said before the difference is, Ally went on and won many many awards. We hope Alfredo can one day, add medals to his collection as well.”
The difference on the night
In a night where clear cut chances were at a premium, Rangers needed the quality delivery of Borna Barisic and Morelos’ poaching instincts to get through the tie.
With just three shots on target in the entire game for Rangers, the Colombian’s impact off the bench was almost instant and he proved to his manager what a big time player he is.
Kemar Roofe was preferred to Morelos up front, but managed just one shot and one dribble in the 63 minutes he was on the field.
Morelos though managed three shots in his 27 minutes, with two on target and of course the difference maker five minutes after he came onto the pitch.
Gerrard spoke earlier this week about the forward and his future remains in doubt, but if he is able to notch up a few more records, then perhaps the former Liverpool man can persuade him to stay and get the best out of him on a regular basis.
