‘Becoming a leader’ – Gerrard thrilled by one Rangers player after win v Poznan
Steven Gerrard has hailed centre-back Connor Goldson after another shutout for Rangers in the Europa League.
He said the player is “in a fantastic place mentally and physically and you can see him becoming a leader.”
Gerrard was talking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Premiership game against Kilmarnock on Sunday.
The 1-0 win against Lech Poznan means that Rangers are still unbeaten in all competitions after a fantastic start to the season.
They’ve got maximum points from their two Europa League games without conceding a single goal.
Rangers also have by far the best defensive record in the Premiership after only conceding three goals in 12 games.
No other side has conceded less than 10.
Goldson has been a massive part of that record, along with skipper James Tavernier.
He’s played the full 90 minutes in every single game and Gerrard obviously sees him as a natural leader at the back.
He seems to have got rid of most of his worst tendencies after a stuttering start to his Gers career and, while it’s goals that get the headlines, Rangers are going to win the Premiership at the back if Goldson can carry on like this for the rest of the season.
He’s won close to 70% of his defensive and aerial duels this season – an incredible number. [WyScout]. He’s also averaging close to five interceptions a game.
Playing alongside skipper Tavernier at the back, it means that Rangers have plenty of leadership at the back – and that’s really starting to pay dividends.
