‘Very exciting’ – Zungu details what he will bring to Rangers when unleashed by Gerrard

New boy Bongani Zungu said that it’s been “very exciting” to see how Rangers play and that quality on the ball and aggression off the ball are the two things he will bring to the side.

The 29-time South Africa international arrived on loan from Amiens this summer and took part in a two-week quarantine before training with his new teammates.

The 28-year-old midfielder is unlikely to start Thursday night’s game against Lech Poznan, but Zungu was keen to outline his two best attributes.

“The two weeks was okay, the club helped me to really get things done,” he said (via BT Sport).

“They provided me with training equipment and some programmes on what to do. It’s been tough because I couldn’t go outside.

“But they made things quite easy for me and I could train indoors, go on the bike, get some weights. Seeing how the team plays and the quality that is in the team is very exciting for me.

“As for me, my quality is I’m good on the ball. I can be aggressive when we don’t have the ball.

“When I spoke with the manager he made it clear what he wants me to do when he gives me an opportunity so those are the two skills that I bring to the game.”

Adding to the mix

When embarking on a title challenge and a Europa League campaign, adding an experienced campaigner who can plug straight into your midfield is important.

Gerrard has already featured 24 different players in the Scottish Premiership so far this season, showing he is keen to rotate in order to avoid burnout, so the addition of a player who describes himself as aggressive off the ball seems like an ideal fit.

Last season, Zungu made 21 appearances for Amiens in Ligue 1 and was effective in his distribution, completing 81.2% of passes (via FBRef). He also made 26 tackles, 19 blocks and 18 interceptions.

Given these stats, Rangers seem to have made a smart addition who can add depth and challenge Steven Davis, Joe Aribo, Ianis Hagi, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and Scott Arfield for a starting spot.
